Update Winter 2012

It has been a long time since I've posted anything on this...obviously!

In the music world:

We last recorded and put up downloads of "That's the Ticket" and "The mountain Man"
on bandcamp.

Currently we are working on TFSA "Roughing up the Suspect" which is an 8 song album. It only needs vocals, but I also have to write lyrics too...for all 8 songs!

There is also another two songs (maybe after Monday Nov 19th it will be three!) that will be an ep called "All the kings horses." It was going to be a new album that is more acoustic, but we had to cancel a lot in the last few months, so ep it is!
One song has almost all the vocals finished, but the other needs lyrics still.

As for Waves of Mercury, Antony Johnson http://www.antonyjohnston.com/
wrote all the lyrics and they are wonderful! If you have not read his work on Wasteland, Coldest city, Queen & Country or a bunch of other things, check his stuff out!
This is four songs that we decided should loosely have a Seasons theme.
I have recorded vocals on two songs, and partial vocals on the last two.
This album is heavy! A lot heavier than even "The Great Darkness" and has a very doomy feel (like My Dying Bride) to it.

In the personal world:

Greg is having a baby! Well, not him, but his wife is!
It's a boy, and the working name for him right now is "Boris"
He won't tell me the real name.
The child will be here before Christmas and the "Army" will be put on hold for a few months...lucky I have so many songs to sing.

David in the last five months :
Getting a divorce.
His nephew Philip moved in.
Working new jobs.
And met a new and absolutely awesome woman that he is smitten with. :)

We hope 2013 is awesome for us and all of you!

We started "Roughing up the Suspect" tonight...

...um, yeah, that does sound bad. We have all the music recorded for the first song on the next Fairly Secret Army ep! It kinda sounds like it would go along well with the three on the Mountain Man ep, so we really like it! After we were finished recording the instruments, Greg said, "It's good to be back to the Fairly Secret Army" And although I really like the new Waves of Mercury songs so far, I will have to agree...It's good to be back to the army!

WAVES OF MERCURY...goes DOOM!

So we have four songs with at least drums and guitars recorded for the new Waves of Mercury cd. It was gonna be four new songs, then the "Oceans Trilogy", but I think we're going to have the Oceans trilogy be it's own ep. As of now, our plan is to have four new songs and a surprise cover song (Antony, you will like our choice) ok, gotta go!

"Pursuit of Heaviness" is now going to be the new six song Waves of Mercury album!

We decided that the songs were really too serious for The Fairly Secret Army...or at least I did...at least for a full ep that's all metal, it just works better as Waves of Mercury. And when I asked Greg about making it a Waves of Mercury ep, he suggested that we record the Oceans Trilogy along with it. So we will re-record those three songs from the Thousand Suns cd and in the future we will re-record all of the rest of the Thousand Suns songs for another Waves of Mercury cd. Now I have to write metal lyrics! OH DRAT!

Fairly Secret Update...?

We now have a final mix of the third FSA album "That's the Ticket" and the first e.p. "Mountain Man"

There will be two versions of the ep, one on an 80 minute cd with the three songs AND the first hour of the interview.
And
A digipak version on a 24 minute minidisc. It will have the three songs and two of them as instrumentals and a bonus track called "Tom Bombadil"

"That's the Ticket" will be on bandcamp soon.
"Mountain Man" will be on bandcamp, but only the three songs with vocals and Tom Bombadil will be on bandcamp.

We are two songs into the next ep "The Pursuit of Heaviness!"
We have everything but the vocals for the first song, and drums and half the guitars for the second song.
If I thought the first song sounded like MY Dying Bride, the second one sounds like we stole riffs and harmonies right from under them!

For the third ep, "Roughing up the Suspect", Greg wants to switch what we do...he would sing and play drums and I would play guitar and bass!
It's gonna be a nightmare...and we'll record it for posterity.

"Keep it secret..."

TFSA Singles? Nope, EPs!

We decided to do e.p.'s instead of singles.

That way we can do three or four songs that fit together ...like we have now, and make cool digipack artwork on mini discs.

Also there might be a new project folky/folk-rock/alt-country?
We'll see.

Oh yeah, I did a final mix of TFSA 3 "That's the Ticket!"
Now just have to listen if things are coolio!

A Discography Of Sorts

Greg and I (David) have recorded a lot of stuff...here's the discography in order...kind of?
On most things Greg plays guitar and/or bass
On most things David sings and plays drums

SOMETIMES GOD HIDES (1996-97) - this was acoustic guitar, cello, percussion and vocals. The cool thing about this project was that Greg and I both sang lead vocals. One self titled album...only on cassette.

MY OLDEST FRIEND (1997-2001) - an instrumental trio with our friend Brandon. It was very heavy on the math rock odd time signature stuff. A co-worker of Greg's said it sounded like we were trying to impress ourselves, which we were! Two albums on cd. "My Oldest Friend is dead" and "Stop"

A THOUSAND SUNS (2005-2006) - This was just Greg and I for the first album (the second album ended up being Waves Of Mercury). It was basically the project we tried to start in 1996 with other people, but failed. This was our European metal influences coming out...but not sounding much like any of them. One self titled album on cd.

WAVES OF MERCURY (2006-maybe another cd?) - This was when Brandon joined and we changed the name because of all the other "Thousand Sun" bands! It picks up where A Thousand Suns left off, but was more of Brandon and I writing, but Greg had a huge part in arranging songs. Influences of black metal and King Crimson started to show up in the first album "The Great Darkness" and our challenge to write an album with very little distorted guitar was how "The Letters" came about. Sadly, by the time we started to write "The Letters", Brandon had passed. We will always miss him and his fantastic guitar playing. Two albums on cd "The Great Darkness" and "The Letters"

GRANT BROTHERS MOVING COMPANY (2007-2008) - This was a project that was Glen Wadie songs. I was playing drums and recording the album with Glen. It's a very Springsteen/Soul Asylum-ish album. We needed a good bass player, and asked Greg if he was interested in recording bass. He had heard a few songs and said "I'm in!"
One album on cd...that was never "officially" finished, but I mixed a version, made artwork and about 20 copies and called it by it's working title "A Bit of what is Broken". Glen still has a live (and I assume recording) version of the band going.

THE FAIRLY SECRET ARMY (2011-Present-Future!) - Our project that (sometimes...actually very rarely, except the first album, but then life bogged us down a bit) follows the idea of writing a song on Monday, recording the drums, bass & guitars that night, and have the vocals recorded by the next Monday...so we can write a new song! The first 8-10 weeks worked just like that...but not so much after. But as of March 3rd 2012, we have two finished albums,a T-Shirt, the third album at 90% finished, and three singles in the works. Two finished albums on cd. "Keep it secret, Keep it safe" and "We miss the Cold War"...and coming soon..."That's the Ticket", "Tom Bombadil" single, and two yet-to-be-named singles.

BLOOD OF THE EARTH (2011-Present) - a post-black-metal-emo-shoegazer project started by Jeff Philips and I. We needed bass and Greg said "I'm In!" This four song e.p. has just had all the bass parts finished this week. Jeff plays guitar, I play drums, Greg plays bass. Both Jeff and I are doing lead vocals. We do plan on both of us doing a mix of the album, so there will be two of each of the four songs to chose from. "Blood of the Earth" was originally supposed to be Corey (lyrics for Waves of Mercury "The Great Darkness") and I, but Jeff liked the name, and I agreed that as long as I could do another Blood of the Earth projects on my own and us that name, it fit this project perfect.

Huge in Russia?

Somehow, Waves of Mercury has shown up on about a dozen download sites in Russia.

There is one site that people post comments, and there have been very good reviews.

One guy gave us 10/10, another said something about Pink Floyd, and there have been King Crimson, Opeth and Anathema references.

I think there might be another Waves of Mercury cd in the future?

oh yeah, Greg is obsessed with reading the comments...and I joined and started posting replies and stuff.

As DLR says..."Stay Frosty"

Artwork?

If people have problems with printing the correct size, let me know and we can send you the original files.

WAVES OF MERCURY - ARTWORK & LYRICS FOR THE GREAT DARKNESS AND THE LETTERS

These are for people to print out and make cd copies with.

The Letters cover is on top and the lyric are on bottom.

You will have to crop off some of the edges, but the lyrics and the artwork will not be cut off. Double sided prints should work out.

Thanks for listening.

I think my neighbors daughter did this?

I don't know why they didn't use our actual music, but I still think it's funny.

WE MISS THE COLD WAR ARTWORK AND LYRICS SHEETS

Feel free to print these out for slimline cd copies to give to all your friends when you burn copies of your favorite new album "We Miss the Cold War"

I think you'll have to cut about 1/8 inch off all the sides, but we accounted for that in the layout. Two sided printing should line up perfect...you just have to figure out how to do it so the lyrics aren't upside down.

Thanks for listening and reading...and being awesome!

THAT'S RIGHT A NEW POST!!! ...about everything.

I've been kinda lazy with this, so hopefully it'll be more updated...:)

I get the artwork for "We Miss The Cold War" tomorrow. I'm excited. Mark cut his hand, so it took him longer than expected.

I think I finally have an image for Waves of Mercury "The Letters"
I hope so, because we finally finished the recordings and the mix has one tweek and it's good to go!

I have no idea why "The Great Darkness" isn't up, we've had art for it forever and...well, if I can get it up soon, you'll know.

TFSA #3 "That's the Ticket" is almost done. I have three songs to sing, but I got hit with a nasty sore throat, so it's delaying that. I have the idea and the models for the cover ...hehehe.

In the mean time, the first two song single for TFSA is underway and drums and some guitar have been recorded already.
With the singles, we'll record two songs, and have fairly simple artwork and put them up on bandcamp as soon as both songs are done. Once we get five singles, then it's be put on as a full cd, but until then, just digital format.

Jeff and I have decided that the first "Blood of the Earth" cd will be a four song cd and all the drums are recorded so far. Greg has been asked to play fretless bass, and Jeff and I will both be handling vocals.

There might be something else, but I'll "Keep it Secret, Keep it Safe"
